Torre Mozza: practical guide to the beach near Riotorto
Torre Mozza is a sandy beach in Tuscany, on the Etruscan Coast, in the municipality of Piombino (province of Livorno). It lies at the southern end of the Sterpaia Coastal Park, about 1 km from the border with Follonica and a few minutes from Riotorto.
It takes its name from the coastal tower by the sea and is known for its fine sand, shallow water and stretches of free beach alternating with beach clubs. It is one of the most convenient beaches in the area for families.
Where Torre Mozza Beach is located
The beach lies along the coast between Piombino and Follonica, in the Gulf of Follonica, at the southern end of the Sterpaia. From Riotorto you can reach it in a few minutes by following the signs for the sea and for Torre Mozza; from Follonica it is about a 10-minute drive north.
The tower was built around 1500 by the Appiani, lords of Piombino, to watch for ships carrying ore from Elba and to defend the coast from pirates. Later it was also used as a landing point for unloading lignite. Today it has been restored and is a hotel.
What the beach is like
The beach has fine, light-coloured sand and a shallow, gently sloping seabed. Near the tower, a few metres from the shore, some rocks breaking the surface keep the water calmer: it is one of the favourite stretches for families with children.
The coastline alternates free beach and beach clubs. Heading north towards the Sterpaia, there is more free beach and fewer crowds.

From the car parks you reach the sea on foot in a few minutes, along flat paths: it is easy even with a beach umbrella, toys and a pushchair.

On windy days, sea conditions can change quickly. Before heading out, it is worth checking the weather forecast, especially when travelling with young children.
Things to see nearby
Torre Mozza is the ideal starting point for discovering the other beaches of the Sterpaia, such as Carbonifera, Mortelliccio and Perelli, all sandy and backed by pine woods.
Within a few minutes you can also reach Riotorto and Follonica, with its seafront promenade and town centre. A little further away are Piombino, the Gulf of Baratti and Populonia.
From Villaggio Mare Verde to Torre Mozza
Villaggio Mare Verde is in Riotorto, in the Campo al Fico area, about 7 km from Torre Mozza, less than 10 minutes by car. The village is in the heart of the Sterpaia Coastal Park: Mortelliccio beach is 3 km away and in summer there is a little train to the sea, so every day you can choose between the Sterpaia and Torre Mozza.
