Suvereto

Where is Suvereto

Suvereto is in Tuscany, in the province of Livorno, on the hills of the Val di Cornia, about fifteen kilometres from the sea of the Etruscan Coast. It is a medieval village of around 2,900 inhabitants, listed among The Most Beautiful Villages in Italy and awarded the Orange Flag of the Touring Club Italiano.

The name comes from the Latin suber, cork oak: Suvereto means “cork oak wood”. The village is documented as early as 973 and still has its walls, stone alleyways and a fortress overlooking the valley.

How to get to Suvereto

Suvereto can be reached by car from Venturina Terme, following the road that climbs up the Val di Cornia through vineyards and olive groves.

  • Villaggio Mare Verde (Riotorto): about 20 km, 20 minutes
  • Piombino: about 23 km, 25 minutes

Cars are left in the car parks around the walls: the historic centre is explored on foot.

What to see in the village of Suvereto

The historic centre is a tangle of cobbled lanes, stone arches and little squares. Not to be missed:

  • the Pieve di San Giusto, a Romanesque church at the entrance to the village;
  • the Cloister of San Francesco, with its brick portico;
  • the village’s walls and gates, with stone houses built up against them.

The best time is late afternoon and evening, when the alleyways light up and restaurants and wine bars set their tables outdoors.

The Aldobrandeschi Fortress

Above the village stands the Aldobrandeschi Fortress (Rocca Aldobrandesca), the medieval stronghold that is the symbol of Suvereto. It is a short walk up from the centre, just a few minutes.

From the fortress the view opens over the whole Val di Cornia: hills, vineyards, the plain stretching to the sea and, on clear days, the promontory of Piombino.

The wine of Suvereto

Suvereto is one of Italy’s Città del Vino (Wine Towns) and gives its name to the Val di Cornia Suvereto appellation. Around the village there are wineries large and small, many open for visits and tastings: we cover them in our guide to the wineries between Bolgheri and the Val di Cornia.

Olive oil is a tradition too: a local olive variety, Lazzero di Prata, is grown here. During the year the village hosts the Sagra del Cinghiale (wild boar festival) and the Palio delle Botti (barrel race).
