San Silvestro Archaeological Mining Park

Mines, a mining train and nature

The San Silvestro Archaeological Mining Park lies in the hills behind Campiglia Marittima, in the heart of the Val di Cornia. Here, archaeology, mining history and the landscape come together among tunnels, trails and old mining facilities.

A visit reveals how minerals were extracted and processed in the hills around Campiglia, through places that tell the story of centuries of mining. The park is also an enjoyable alternative to a day at the beach, especially for families and anyone interested in a lesser-known side of the Etruscan Coast.

The park is easy to reach by car from Villaggio Mare Verde. You can combine your visit with a trip to Campiglia Marittima or a stop in Venturina Terme.

Where is San Silvestro Archaeological Mining Park?

The park is in the municipality of Campiglia Marittima, in the province of Livorno. It extends across the hills of the Val di Cornia, a short distance from the medieval village and the plain of Venturina.

The landscape preserves many traces of the mining and metalworking activities that have taken place here since ancient times. Along the trails, you can see mine entrances, the remains of industrial buildings, quarries and structures once used to transport and process minerals.

The park’s visitor centre is the starting point for visitors. Before setting off, check the official San Silvestro Archaeological Mining Park website for available routes, tour times and any booking requirements.

What to see in San Silvestro Park

The park offers different experiences to suit the time you have available, the ages of your group and what is open on the day of your visit.

The main attractions include:

  • the Temperino Mine;
  • the mining train route;
  • the Valle dei Lanzi;
  • the remains of the mining facilities;
  • the Rocca di San Silvestro;
  • archaeological and nature trails;
  • museums dedicated to the area’s mining history.

Some experiences may not be available throughout the year. Opening times, access arrangements and routes can change for operational, seasonal or maintenance reasons.

Visiting the Temperino Mine

The Temperino Mine is one of the park’s highlights. A guided tour takes you inside a mining tunnel, where you can see the rocks, minerals and traces left by the miners.

Along the way, the guide explains the extraction methods used in different periods and the conditions in which miners worked. The experience shows how deeply mining shaped the history and economy of the Val di Cornia.

The tunnel is generally cooler than it is outside, and the ground may be damp. Even in summer, it is useful to bring a light sweatshirt and wear closed shoes with suitable soles.

The mining train

A ride on the mining train is one of the most popular experiences for families. The train passes through the Lanzi–Temperino Tunnel, following a route once used to carry minerals from the extraction sites to the processing facilities.

The journey offers insight into how work in the mines was organised and how extracted materials were moved. For children, it is an engaging introduction to local history, combining the guide’s stories with the experience of the ride.

The train service and route may be subject to availability, scheduled departures and specific conditions. Check the timetable in advance and arrive at the visitor centre with enough time before your scheduled entry.

Valle dei Lanzi and the mining facilities

Valle dei Lanzi preserves important evidence of more recent mining activity. Here you can find buildings, structures and facilities associated with the extraction and processing of minerals.

The landscape clearly shows the relationship between the natural environment and human work. Hills, Mediterranean vegetation and rock formations sit alongside the remains of industrial infrastructure, creating a scene quite different from the nearby seaside towns.

A visit reveals that the area around Piombino and Campiglia Marittima has a long metalworking and mining tradition as well as a coastal heritage.

The Rocca di San Silvestro

In the park’s higher reaches stand the remains of the Rocca di San Silvestro, a medieval fortified settlement established in connection with the area’s mineral resources.

The settlement included homes, production facilities, defences and spaces used by the community. Its position allowed inhabitants to oversee the surrounding area and the activities associated with extracting and processing metals.

The walk up to the fortress takes more time and effort than the guided visits near the visitor centre. It is a good choice for anyone who enjoys walking and wants to combine archaeology, nature and panoramic views.

Visiting San Silvestro Park with children

San Silvestro Archaeological Mining Park is an appealing destination for a family day out. The mine tour and train ride bring the area’s history to life and let children explore surroundings very different from those of a typical seaside holiday.

Before your visit, check:

  • whether any routes have a minimum age requirement;
  • the duration of guided tours;
  • the availability of the mining train;
  • accessibility for pushchairs;
  • the conditions and difficulty of your chosen trails;
  • whether you need to book in advance.

The longer trails and the climb to the Rocca di San Silvestro may be demanding for very young children. For a first visit, a guided experience combining the mine and the train may be a good option, subject to the park’s advice.

Families staying with us can alternate this excursion with the activities and facilities at our family-friendly holiday village in Tuscany.

What to wear and bring

For a visit to the park, wear comfortable, closed shoes with good grip. The trails can be uneven, while the tunnels are cooler and may be damp.

It is useful to bring:

  • a sweatshirt or light jacket for the mine tour;
  • trainers or hiking shoes;
  • water, especially in the warmer months;
  • a hat and sun protection;
  • a light backpack;
  • snacks for children, if needed.

In summer, it is best to avoid the more exposed trails during the hottest part of the day. After rain, some sections may be slippery and require extra care.

How long does a visit take?

The length of your visit depends on the route you choose. The main guided experiences can take a few hours. If you also want to explore the trails and reach the Rocca di San Silvestro, you may need to devote much of the day to the park.

Check the times of individual activities before you leave. Mine tours and train rides may run at scheduled times and may not be available for visitors to access independently.

To avoid a rushed itinerary, choose your priorities in advance and allow enough time to move between the different areas.

When to visit the Archaeological Mining Park

Spring and early autumn are particularly pleasant times to visit the park and walk its trails in milder temperatures. In summer, the mine tour also provides a break from the midday heat, but outdoor walks need a little more planning.

The park can be an alternative to the beach on a cloudy day. In severe weather, however, check that tours and trails are open as scheduled.

Opening dates, hours, prices and available activities may change during the year. Before setting off, consult the official Val di Cornia Parks opening hours and prices page.
