Populonia

Where is Populonia

Populonia is a hamlet in the municipality of Piombino, in the province of Livorno, on the promontory that closes off the Gulf of Baratti to the north. The village, 170 metres above the sea, looks out over the bay on one side and Elba Island on the other.

It is a unique place in Tuscany: of the cities of the Etruscan Dodecapolis, Populonia was the only one built right on the coast, and its wealth came from processing iron ore from Elba. Today you can visit the small medieval village of Populonia Alta, the fortress and the large archaeological park that runs down to the sea.

  • Piombino: about 14 km, 20–25 minutes
  • Villaggio Mare Verde (Riotorto): about 19 km, 25–30 minutes

How to visit Populonia

  • Populonia Alta, the walled village with its fortress, at the top of the promontory.
  • The Archaeological Park of Baratti and Populonia, which stretches from the acropolis down to the necropolises on the gulf.
  • The beach of the Gulf of Baratti, at the foot of the promontory.

In just a few minutes you go from the beach to the archaeological trails and up to the village lanes overlooking the sea.

Populonia Alta: the medieval village

Populonia Alta is a tiny village, enclosed by walls and gathered around a few stone streets. Its present appearance dates back to the 15th century, when the Appiani, lords of Piombino, fortified it.

You can see it on foot in less than an hour: little squares, craft shops, the small Gasparri Collection of Etruscan finds and, from every corner, views of the gulf and Elba. The best time to visit is late afternoon.

The Fortress of Populonia

The highest point of the village is the Rocca di Populonia, also known as the Castle of Populonia. It was begun by Jacopo II Appiano and completed by Jacopo III around the middle of the 15th century, to control the coast and the channel towards Elba.

From the tower the view takes in the whole Gulf of Baratti, the coast as far as San Vincenzo and, on clear days, the Tuscan Archipelago.

The Archaeological Park of Baratti and Populonia

It is one of the most important Etruscan sites in Italy. It includes:

  • the acropolis, with the remains of Etruscan and Roman temples and buildings;
  • the San Cerbone necropolis, with its large tumulus tombs near Baratti beach;
  • the necropolises of Casone and Le Grotte, with tombs carved into the rock, and the ancient quarries.

There are two entrances, one on the gulf and one at Populonia Alta. Opening hours and tickets vary with the season: check them on the Parchi Val di Cornia website. To complete your visit, the most important finds are in the Archaeological Museum in the Cittadella of Piombino.

Baratti and Populonia: the link with the sea

At the foot of the promontory lies the Gulf of Baratti, with its dark sand, clear sea and pine woods right down to the shore. It was the port of Populonia, and the sand is dark precisely because of the residue from iron processing.

Baratti is perfect for a swim or lunch with a sea view after visiting the archaeological park.

Buca delle Fate

For those who love walking, Buca delle Fate is a rocky cove on the side of the promontory facing Piombino. It can only be reached on foot, along a path through the Mediterranean scrub with spectacular views of the sea. It is a less crowded area, ideal if you are looking for peace and quiet.

Populonia in one day

  • Morning: the Archaeological Park, with the San Cerbone necropolis and the acropolis.
  • Lunch: at Baratti, on the gulf.
  • Afternoon: a swim at Baratti or the path to Buca delle Fate.
  • Late afternoon: Populonia Alta and the fortress.
  • Sunset: the view over the gulf from the village walls.

How to get there and where to park

Populonia can be reached by car from the Strada della Principessa, which links San Vincenzo and Piombino, following the signs first for Baratti and then for Populonia. The road climbs the promontory with a few hairpin bends.

Leave the car in the car parks outside the walls: the village is small and best explored on foot. For the archaeological park there is also parking at the entrance on the Gulf of Baratti. In summer it is best to arrive in the morning.
