Gulf of Baratti

Where is the Gulf of Baratti

The Gulf of Baratti is in Tuscany, in the municipality of Piombino (province of Livorno), at the foot of the Populonia promontory. It is about 10 km from the centre of Piombino and 15 km from Villaggio Mare Verde.

It is one of the most recognisable places on the Etruscan Coast: a crescent-shaped bay backed by pine woods, a small harbour and, on the hill, the remains of the only Etruscan city built on the sea. Here you can swim just a few steps from necropolises more than 2,500 years old.

How to get there and where to park

Baratti can be reached by car from the Strada della Principessa, which links San Vincenzo and Piombino, following the signs for Populonia. Car parks are located along the gulf road and near the small harbour and the archaeological park.

In July and August they fill up early: it is best to arrive by 9:30 or in the late afternoon, when the gulf is quieter and the light is at its most beautiful.

Baratti beach: dark sand and pine woods

The beach of the Gulf of Baratti has a special feature: in many places the sand is dark. This comes from the residue of processing iron ore from Elba, which the Etruscans and later the Romans smelted right here.

The sea is generally calm, the seabed slopes gently and the pine woods behind the beach offer shade during the hottest hours. There are free stretches and a few beach clubs. Towards the small harbour the coast becomes rocky and the seabed is great for snorkelling.

The Archaeological Park of Baratti and Populonia

Between the 8th and 5th centuries BC Populonia controlled the iron trade in the Mediterranean, and Baratti was its port. Today the Archaeological Park of Baratti and Populonia preserves the necropolis of San Cerbone, with its large tumulus tombs just a few metres from the beach, and those of Casone and Le Grotte, carved into the rock, as well as the ancient quarries.

The park has two entrances, one on the gulf (Necropolis) and one at Populonia Alta (Acropolis). Opening hours and tickets vary with the season: check them on the Parchi Val di Cornia website before you go.

Trails and viewpoints

The promontory is crossed by trails through the Mediterranean scrub, with views over the gulf and the Tuscan Archipelago. The best known leads to Buca delle Fate, a rocky cove on the opposite side of the promontory.

From the gulf you can also go up to the village of Populonia, with its fortress and a view over the whole bay: it is only a few minutes by car.

When to visit the Gulf of Baratti

For the beach, the best months are June and September: warm water, fewer crowds and easier parking. July and August are the busiest months.

In spring and autumn Baratti is perfect for walking the trails and visiting the archaeological park without the summer heat. At sunset the gulf turns orange: it is one of the most beautiful times to see it.
