Campiglia Marittima

Where is Campiglia Marittima

Campiglia Marittima is in Tuscany, in the province of Livorno, on a hill overlooking the Val di Cornia, a few kilometres from the sea at San Vincenzo and the Etruscan Coast. The municipality has around 12,000 inhabitants and also includes Venturina Terme, at the foot of the hill.

The village, documented since 1004, has been listed among The Most Beautiful Villages in Italy since 2021. The name comes from the Latin campus, field; “Marittima” was added in 1862 to show that it belonged to the Maremma.

  • San Vincenzo: about 9 km, 12 minutes
  • Villaggio Mare Verde (Riotorto): about 17 km, 17 minutes

How to visit Campiglia Marittima

You get there by car from Venturina, driving up to the village. Cars are left in the car parks outside the walls, and the centre can be explored on foot in a couple of hours, entering through one of the historic gates: Porta Fiorentina, Porta Pisana or Porta del Ribellino.

The climbs are short but steep: comfortable shoes are a good idea, and in summer the late afternoon is the best time.

What to see in the historic centre

  • Palazzo Pretorio, its façade covered with 65 coats of arms of the podestà who governed the town.
  • The Teatro dei Concordi, a small 19th-century theatre in the heart of the village.
  • Flower-filled alleyways, arches and little squares with views across the valley to the sea.

Be sure to try schiaccia campigliese, the village’s traditional cake. In mid-August the streets fill with performers for Apritiborgo, the street theatre festival.

The Rocca of Campiglia

At the top of the village stands the Rocca di Campiglia, the medieval fortress from which the valley was controlled. Inside there is a small archaeological museum, opened in 2008.

From the fortress the view sweeps over the Val di Cornia, the coast and, on clear days, Elba.

The mines and the Rocca di San Silvestro

The hills of Campiglia were mined for centuries for copper, lead and silver, as far back as the Etruscans and the Romans. Today you can discover this history at the San Silvestro Archaeological Mining Park, a few minutes from the village: tunnels, a mining train and the remains of the Rocca di San Silvestro, a fortified miners’ village from the 10th–11th century.

It is one of the best day trips to do with children.
